Officials and supporters of the Fort Smith Museum of History began celebrating its centennial this year with a Mardi Gras fundraiser, a fun casual midwinter party held Friday night (Feb. 12) at Immaculate Conception Parish Hall in downtown Fort Smith.

The fundraiser kicked off a 10-month series of events and exhibits that will culminate in a birthday party for the museum on its official birth date, Dec. 10. (Link here for a more detailed story on the museum and its centennial year of activities.)

"This is the main fundraiser for the museum," said Kenny Blasche, a member of the museum’s board of directors. "The money is used for the museum’s operating expenses. We would like to raise $40,000."

More than 400 party goers enjoyed cocktails and a Cajun dinner followed by a live auction. During the first part of the evening a Louisiana-style brass band played jazz music. After the dinner, Mr. Cabbagehead and the Screamin’ Radishes took to the stage and provided dance music.

Noting it takes about three months to plan, Blasche said, "It’s always fun. There are masks, trinkets, beads and great auction items. Included in the live auction were trips to Florida, New Mexico and Eureka Springs. The German Oktoberfest at Susan and Sam Fiori’s for up to 50 people is a popular item and raises the most money."

And true to form, Richard and JoElla Yaffe won the bid for the dinner at $5,200. Auctioneer Doug Swartz and emcee Daren Bobb kept the evening exciting along with spotter Phil White who encouraged bidders.

In addition to the live auction, there was a raffle for a $2,000 shopping spree at Newton’s Jewelers.
