Got the winter blues? Maybe a little fun in the artificial sun will serve as a pick-me-up.

Fayetteville’s newest tanning salon is up and running, with 15 beds and one MYSTIC TAN high-dry apparatus filling 2,500 SF. Co-owner Chris Wagoner said there are several things that make The Tan Company, which has 70 locations in 13 states, superior to its competitors.

The first is the store’s expanded hours. Wagoner also said the seven employees at the Fayetteville location mix supreme customer service with industry knowledge. All employees must go through an online certification process and are subject to continuing education.

“We promote tanning in moderation, without overexposure,” Wagoner said.

The Tan Company also handles memberships on a month-to-month basis that includes unlimited tanning packages and product discounts. Wagoner said the best value is the $24.88 per month package, and that University of Arkansas students get a rate of $18.88. All memberships include access to The Tan Company’s other locations.

Wagoner and his partners, Ryan Wagoner and Tonya Hahn own the franchise rights in Arkansas, and hope to expand throughout the state.

According to information provided by the company’s marketing firm, estimated initial investments for stores range from $318,050 and $667,950. Royalties are 6 percent of gross sales paid monthly and franchisees are required to make a 3 percent contribution to an advertising fund.

Reports available via the Federal Trade Commission indicated The Tan Company salons had average revenues of $557,769 and an average profit of $219,550 in 2006.

When Clarence Sears got tired of traveling the regional antique-show circuit, he decided on a more permanent home for his collection.

Thus, C & J Antiques was born. The shop in downtown Rogers specializes in vintage furniture and glassware, including a sizable selection of 150-year-old Flow Blue china items.

Sears said other inventory includes silver, clocks, toys and tools, as well as some Western memorabilia.

“I’ve got a little bit of everything in here, but it’s not flea-market stuff,” Sears added. “It’s strictly antiques.”
