LADY LIONS
Home sweet home.

Four players scored in double-figures as the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith Lady Lions snapped their winless start with a 75-72 win against the University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms at the Stubblefield Center.

It was the home debut for the Lady Lions (1-6), who opened the season with six consecutive roads games.

UAFS avenged its earlier loss to the UA Monticello (2-5), which beat the Lady Lions 88-81 in shootout during the final day of the third annual Dr. Mary Jane Gilbert Classic at Steelman Fieldhouse in Monticello on Nov. 21.

Sophomore guard Tracey Parsons and junior Janae’ Hendreson led the Lady Lions with 14 points apiece, while freshman Chelsea Sublett posted her second consecutive double-double with a career-high tying 10 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.
The Lady Lions shot 35% (28 of 65) from the field and 31% (5 of 16) from 3-point range.

UAFS was just as potent defensively. After allowing 14 3-pointers in their previous loss to the Cotton Blossoms, who are picked to finish third in the Gulf South Conference West Division, the Lady Lions allowed only five 3-pointers.

UA Monticello shot 43% (28 of 65) from the field and just 31% from 3-point range. UAFS forced 29 turnovers – a season-high – and collected 15 steals. Junior Vasha Sanders had a team-high four steals.

The Lady Lions, who are making their NCAA Division II debut this season and competing in the Heartland Conference, will resume regular-season play on Dec. 19 when they host Pittsburg State at 2 p.m. at the Stubblefield Center.
