Bookstores Fall on Hard Times

It seems mall shoppers just aren’t buying books these days.

Barnes & Noble Booksellers is phasing out its smaller mall-based chain B. Dalton Booksellers. The company will close its location in the Northwest Arkansas Mall in Fayetteville by the end of January, along with 49 other locations nationwide.

Borders Group Inc. is also getting rid of its mall stores. The company will shutter 200 Waldenbooks by the end of January as part of its “mall-based right-sizing initiative.”

The Borders bookstore at the Pinnacle Hills Promenade in Rogers will be the company’s only store left in the state.
