City of Fort Smith issues yard debris rules

The following statement was issued by Garry Cathcart, an administrative supervisor with the city of Fort Smith:

Cooler temperatures bring spectacular bursts of fall foliage. When nature is finished with her colorful display, the trees shed themselves of the year’s leaves. Most lawn contractors properly dispose of the yard debris so that they don’t create a nuisance for the neighborhood. However, some lawn contractors blow, sweep or place their yard debris in the streets, ditches or creeks and creating serious problems. This can clog storm water inlets and drainage ways and result in flooding for other property owners. Don’t “leave the leaves” for someone else to take care of. Please be advised that it is against the Municipal Code to place yard debris on the City right-of-way or drainage easements.

Things not to do
• Blow, sweep or place the yard debris in the street, ditches, creeks, drainage inlets or easements
• Burn yard debris
