Stephanie Oram isn’t interested in a run-of-the-mill gym.

“We’re swinging for the fences,” said Oram, who plans to open X-TrainFit Athletic Club in Bentonville on Nov. 1.

Some of the services and amenities – weightlifting and cardio areas, full-service locker rooms, etc. – at X-TrainFit will be familiar to fitness clubbers. What Oram hopes will make her 11,000-SF club different are a handful of extras.

Free childcare is available for members, for example, and will include fitness activities. X-TrainFit also boasts the area’s only purpose-built hot yoga room and indoor boot camp space.

Spa services will be available, too, with a licensed aesthetician and masseuse. Those employees are part of a staff consisting of 10 part-time workers and a group of 10 personal trainers and instructors.

“Where I’ll compete and where I’ll win is the service we’re going to provide,” said Oram, a 16-year fitness industry vet.

That doesn’t mean patrons won’t be pushed. The hot yoga classes and boot camp sessions are designed to test limits.

Even so, Oram said the emphasis is on meeting individual needs of customers. Oram has been conducting outdoor boot camp classes since November 2008, and said she has a 90 percent retention rate.

“We make everybody succeed on their own level,” she said.

The first 150 members will receive a lifetime rate of $550 a year for individuals or $1,000 for families. Regular monthly rates are $65 for individuals, $95 for families and $50 for corporate-type groups of five or more, with no signup fee.

Wendy Finn’s mobile spa business has found a more permanent home.

The 1,040-SF space is directly above Hugo’s, a popular downtown Fayetteville restaurant, and emits a warm, comfy vibe. A wide selection of massage and spa services makes it even more inviting.

Finn said I.M. Spa features the only barefoot spa room in the area, and also specializes in Thai massage, which incorporates yoga-style stretching.

A staff of seven includes an aesthetician and acupuncturist, who focus more on health and wellness than cosmetic beauty.

“If you feel good and you feel healthy,” Finn said, “then you exude beauty.”

Finn spent $20,000 renovating her current location after spending three years as a mobile enterprise. I.M. Spa also offers fragrance-free massage oils and foot balms, all of which are locally produced, and the walls are decorated with local art.
