It’s standard practice to take cars for a test drive, but have you ever taken a test nap while mattress-shopping?

r

That’s what passes for the norm at Mountain Air Organic Beds, the area’s only certified organic mattress dealer, according to owner Joyce Robertson.

r

“Everything we sell has to pass the test,” Robertson said. “Is it good for us, is it good for the customer, is it good for the world?”

r

Located in a stone building formerly used as a pawn shop and realty company, among other things, Mountain Air specializes in eco-friendly mattresses, pillows, bedding and furniture. Roberston said the products offer superior comfort and longer comfort life than products that contain chemical and/or synthetic materials.

r

Mattresses start at just less than $1,300 and top out around $3,500. Sheet sets range from $45 to $85, pillows from $75 to $150, and comforters from $100 to $300.

r

Robertson said the company started with an initial investment of about $20,000 and offered online sales only from October through June. Now, with multiple rooms displaying custom-designed mattresses and furniture — including a space designed specifically for napping — customers can test the comforts first-hand.

r

“We aren’t a regular mattress store, we don’t do business like a regular mattress store, so we didn’t want a building like a regular mattress store,” Robertson said.
