Charitable giving in the United States dropped by 2 percent in 2008 according to the Giving USA Foundation, which publishes data and trends about such things.

The local chapter of the American Heart Association, however, is bucking that trend. AHA, which currently is up 22 percent in year-over-year giving, also has announced a partnership that should further boost its fundraising totals.

AHA, via its Go Red for Women campaign, has teamed with USA Bouquet and Wal-Mart to educate women on the risks of heart disease and raise funds for its cure. Special arrangements will be sold in select Wal-Mart stores throughout the United States from Aug. 28 to Sept. 24, with a portion of proceeds earmarked for heart-disease research.

The AHA’s Northwest Arkansas chapter also recently announced Jane Bullinger as the chairperson for the Go Red Boutique Expo, to be held Feb. 16 at the John Q. Hammons Convention Center in Rogers. Bullinger lives in Fayetteville and leads the Quaker Foods & Snacks team for Wal-Mart.
