Constitution Week planned at UAFS
The American Democracy Project at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith will host a series of events the week of Sept. 14-18 in recognition of Constitution Week.
This year’s theme is “Freedom of the Press and You.” The American Democracy Steering Committee, comprised of students, faculty and staff, chose to focus on Freedom of the Press to highlight the fragile balance between freedom and responsibility in the press.
The week will kick off with “Let Your Voice Be Heard,” a forum-type event, to take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sept. 14, in the lecture hall of the Gardner Building. At 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 17, syndicated columnist John Brummett will speak in Breedlove Auditorium on “The Burden of Freedom.” His lecture will focus on the role of the media in reference to the First Amendment. Brummett has been writing for Arkansas newspapers for almost 40 years, writing columns on Arkansas politics since 1986 and winning numerous awards throughout the years.
Voter registration drives will also be held in conjunction with each event. Registration will be held from 10-11 a.m. in the plaza of the Gardner Building prior to the forum and in the lobby of the Breedlove Building following Brummett’s talk.
