The Education Week “Diplomas Count” study, sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, determined that among the nation’s urban school districts, the Fort Smith Public School District exceeds statistical expectations by 18%. The comparison of graduation rates placed Fort Smith just behind the Warren Township District in Indianapolis, Ind., and Texarkana, Texas, Independent School District which both recorded a graduation index 21% above the expected numbers.

Fort Smith’s 84% graduation rate was, however, second only to the Yuba City United School District in Yuba, Calif., which was credited with an 85% graduation rate. The national average graduation rate was 69%.
