Walton Family Tops Largest Nonprofits in Northwest Arkansas
It wasn’t a surprise to see the Walton Family Foundation top the list of largest nonprofit organizations in Northwest Arkansas again this year. After all, the Walton Foundation is the top nonprofit entity in the entire state.
The foundation established by the family of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton had assets with market value of over $1.1 billion at the end of 2007, with annual expenses and disbursements at around $223 million.
Also appearing in the top 10 is the Wal-Mart Foundation, also based in Bentonville. Its $22.9 million in assets are a tiny fraction of the Walton Family Foundation’s, but it gave away more than $111 million during the fiscal year that ended on Jan. 31, 2007.
The University of Arkansas takes up the second and third positions with the UA Foundation and UA-Fayetteville Campus Foundation respectively.
Health and housing take the final two places of the top five with Butterfield Trail Village counting $307 million in assets and the Washington Regional County Medial Center holding $130 million, based on figures from fiscal year 2006.
