State Benefits From Nonprofits
A recent study found that charitable organizations in Arkansas contributed more than $14 billion to the state’s economy from 2005 to 2008.
The study, conducted by the Institute for Economic Advancement at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock College of Business, looked at 1,490 tax exempt nonprofits in the state with combined revenue of $9.9 billion.
Ed Clifford, board chair of the Northwest Arkansas Community Foundation, said the study is proof that nonprofits are a vital part of the quality of life and the economy in Northwest Arkansas.
“Northwest Arkansas has changed dramatically over the last several decades,” he said. “This trend is evident not only in population growth and the business sector, but also in the nonprofit and social sector.”
The study also found that the nonprofit sector had created and maintained nearly 190,000 jobs for Arkansans.
The majority of nonprofit employment was found in the health care and social assistance sector, followed by the educational services sector.
