Fort Smith contractor SSI Inc. is building a new hangar on South 66th Street for the Fort Smith Regional Airport.

The $1.32 million project includes two metal structures that will be about 20,000 SF each. The hangar is designed for commercial aircraft to be rented out to plane owners, said Dan Howell, project manager.

It will include a small pilot lounge in addition to the hangar space, he said. The hangars should have room for 28 planes.

SSI hasn’t broken ground on the project yet, but that should be under way by late July, with construction expected to be complete about six months later.

Forsgren Inc. is handling paving work on the project, while Trotter Electric Inc. is taking on electrical duties.
