Hotel and development company SJS Hospitality LLC will soon begin an 18- to 24-month conversion of the historic Atlas Life Building from its current retail and office use to a 120-room hotel in partnership with the Courtyard by Marriott brand concept, said Jeff Hartman, Tulsa operating partner of SJS Hospitality.

The Atlas Life Building was purchased recently from Kanbar Properties. Kanbar’s Tulsa office will serve as interim property manager for the building on Boston Avenue.

Plans are under negotiation for the Tulsa Press Club and the Atlas Grill restaurant to remain in the building to offer dining options to hotel patrons and continued service to the downtown community.

Plans for parking adjacent to the building also are under negotiation.

Marriott’s national urban design team, which specializes in the development of existing buildings, will work closely with the SJS project team of Tulsa-based architects GH2 and contractor Thomas Construction to integrate the historical nature of the building throughout its renewal. SJS will invest approximately $12 million in the renovation.

“We look forward to making several announcements in the coming months about the hotel’s name, employment numbers and opportunities, architectural renderings, food venue plans and additional retail tenantship of the building,” Hartman said.
