Not counting student loans, how much money did you make while in college?
One aspiring University of Arkansas student won’t receive his degree in finance with a concentration on real estate until May. But as a full-time student last year, Joel Sanders produced a residential sales volume of $6.27 million as a Realtor with Allred Properties in Fayetteville. That’s quite an internship for the 22-year-old.
“I was home over the summer when I was 20 and I just figured I’d go ahead and get my real estate license,” Sanders said. “I thought I might as well get a job and put myself to good use. But I had zero experience, kind of like trying to drive a car for the first time without reading a manual on how to do it.”
Sanders said he’s found his niche in investment property, where he helps about 30 investors identify and purchase homes, duplexes or apartments that they will rent out. While the flexibility of selling real estate bodes well for a student’s class schedules, it’s the other side of college life that Sanders has had to sacrifice.
“I lived in a fraternity house when I started and now have a couple of roommates I live with in a house,” Sanders said. “And so my friends are already drinking by 2 or 3 in the afternoon, and that’s when I’m working my tail off.”
