Vegrandis LLC in Fayetteville — a portfolio company of Virtual Incubation Co. — received a $100,000 Phase I Small Business Technology Transfer award from the National Science Foundation. The money will be used for development of a portable instrument that will measure levels of indoor allergens.

Vegrandis designs and builds micro-electrochemical detection-based point-of-care instruments.

The instrument could be used in the home or dust samples could be tested at a doctor’s office. It can test small amounts of multiple allergens in less than an hour. Currently, tests can take several weeks.

The portable allergen tester uses technology licensed from the University of Arkansas. Vegrandis has received 11 such awards, totaling over $3 million since April 2003.
