KHBS+ retook the lead during the 10 p.m. newscast in Northwest Arkansas for the month of May after KNWA won the important time slot in the November ratings period, according to data compiled by Nielsen Media Research.

KHBS+ (which includes KHBS, Channel 40 in Fort Smith, and KHOG, Channel 29 in Fayetteville) had a 9.3 rating at 10 p.m. for Washington, Benton and Madison counties combined.

KNWA had a 5.5 rating during the same time slot, down from 7.4 in November, but still beating KFSM, Channel 5, which had a 4.6 rating.

KFSM was the clear winner in the entire 11-county designated market area, though. The CBS affiliate, which is owned by The New York Times Co., led during all three evening news time slots.

KHBS+ was the winner during all three evening time slots in Northwest Arkansas. The ABC affiliate is owned by Hearst-Argyle Television Inc.

KNWA shifted its focus from the 11-county DMA to Washington and Benton counties in 2004, which apparently has paid off with more viewership in Northwest Arkansas. The NBC affiliate is owned by Nexstar Broadcasting Group of Irving, Texas.

“Rating” is percentage of television households in the area. Nielsen rates the stations four times annually: February, May, July and November.
