The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette began publishing Noticias Libres in April to serve Northwest Arkansas’ Spanish-speaking population. The name translates to mean “free press.”

Pablo Bello of Michigan was hired as editor of the newspaper, which is circulated for free through about 210 locations in Northwest Arkansas, said Hector Cueva, the D-G’s circulation director.

Cueva said the weekly newspaper has a press run of about 10,000 copies. He said people are picking up about 80 percent of the distributed copies. That’s up from about 60 percent in April.

The new paper has two weekly Spanish-language competitors that are owned by Stephens Media Group of Little Rock — La Prensa in Springdale and El Tiempo in McDonald County, Mo.
