We wanted to eat fast, but we also wanted to eat healthy.

So, on a recent Thursday, three people from our staff decided to try Tropical Smoothie Café, which opened a few months ago in Fayetteville’s Signature Plaza.

When we got there, the place was spotlessly clean and looked very much like a Florida-based chain, which it is. Plastic palm trees, along with real plants, add to the sunny, colorful décor.

The service was faster than gale force winds.

The first person in our group ordered, then headed for the restroom to wash her hands. Before she returned to the table, an employee from Tropical Smoothie was walking the floor, salad in hand, calling her name.

She enjoyed her sesame chicken salad ($5), but she could have used more toppings to go with the heaping bowl of lettuce. The sesame-coated chicken was flavored nicely, but it had that pre-fabricated, pre-packaged texture to it. She’d go back for the chocolate chip cookie, which at 88 cents was a steal and actually tasted homemade.

One diner in our group ordered the sesame chicken wrap ($5) and “mocha madness” smoothie ($4).

With the first bite, he was pleasantly surprised. The wrap was very good for a place that seemed like upscale fast food. It contained chicken breast strips, romaine lettuce, almonds, onions, crunchy wontons, sesame seeds and a sesame dressing wrapped in a white tortilla.

His smoothie was also good. It contained Ghirardelli chocolate, coffee, cappuccino and non-fat yogurt.

Another reviewer tried the Thai chicken wrap ($5), which was similar to the sesame wrap but with a Thai peanut sauce. He also ordered a “funky monkey” smoothie ($4), which has a base of peanut butter.

It was all very tasty, he said, but he felt like he’d probably over-dosed on peanuts.
