Caf? ?Rude? Orleans Ad Hits Sore Spot (Outtakes Opinion)

Café Rue Orleans, a Fayetteville restaurant, has been running a radio ad that rankles our collective hides.

With a heavy New Orleans accent, the voice speaks of how one day the “Big Easy” will return to its former glory, even though the vast majority of restaurants there are temporarily closed because of Hurricane Katrina.

But until then, the ad says in a roundabout way, you can still get an authentic taste of the city right here in Northwest Arkansas, at Café Rue Orleans.

Katrina was more than a natural disaster. It quickly escalated into a full-scale social catastrophe with a body count approaching 1,000. We doubt any reasonable business would have tried to capitalize on the Oklahoma City bombing or the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Well-intentioned as the Rue Orleans spot might have been in the planning and production stages, we think it’s downright rude and disrespectful to those still suffering in the wake of Katrina.
