Fort Smith Airport Numbers Drop for Month of August

The Fort Smith Regional Airport’s passenger numbers for August were down from July. Overall passengers that flew in and out of the airport in August were down 10.9 percent to 16,427 from 18,435 in July, showing signs that summer travel has officially ended.

August enplanements were 8,144, down 12.3 percent from 9,286 in July. Deplanements were also down 9.5 percent to 8,283 from 9,149.

However, there were more people flying in and out of Fort Smith in August than in August 2004, with an increase of 5.5 percent.

Year-end totals are expected to show more passengers at the airport. Through August, passengers are up 11.3 percent, to 132,417 compared to 118,987 in August 2004.

The Fort Smith airport offers nine departures per weekday to Dallas/Fort Worth and Memphis. American Airlines is the main airline with 66 percent of the passengers, followed by Northwest Airlines with 33 percent. Charters make up the remaining 1 percent of airline traffic.
