Two stay-at-home moms began their careers after their kids were in their teens: That’s the story of Vicci Hull and Brenda Carpenter, who do faux painting for new construction or redesigns in homes.
Hull, who has interest in a construction company, wanted to make the homes she was building unique. She discussed it with Carpenter, and the two started looking into faux painting. They decided to attend a school for those techniques in Kentucky.
For about $5,000 each, the two started the companies. Each woman has her own business due to bookkeeping concerns, but they work together on their projects. Each owner works out of her home.
“Wallpaper is going out,” Carpenter said. The benefits of faux painting, Hull and Carpenter agreed, are that you don’t have to peel it off when you want a change, and that each wall is completely unique.
Some faux painting techniques are brick exposed through plaster, elephant hide, marble, leather, denim, raised stencils and more.
The two currently have no employees but might hire someone to come in and do the first coat if they get too busy.
“We’d like to grow as long as the fun stays in it,” Hull said. “If we grew too much, the fun might go out of it.”
And for these ladies, the fun is the most important part of their new careers.
