The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette won 33 awards in this year’s Arkansas Press Association competition. The state’s largest newspaper garnered 11 first-place awards, including first place for General Excellence. The D-G also won seven second-place awards, five third-place awards and 10 honorable mentions.

Only one of the D-G’s awards, however, was attributed directly to staff in the newspaper’s Northwest Arkansas office. Some employees in the Lowell office have said the northwest division is usually overlooked by the Little Rock office when it’s time to submit articles for award competitions.

In the larger dailies competition:

• The Morning News of Springdale won 26 APA awards, including three first-place, 11 second-place, six third-place and six honorable mentions. The Morning News won second place for General Excellence.

• The Benton County Daily Record of Bentonville received 24 awards, including six first-place, five second-place, three third-place and nine honorable mentions. The Daily Record won third place for General Excellence.

• The Northwest Arkansas Times of Fayetteville won 14 awards, including two second-place, three third-place and nine honorable mentions.

The Daily Record and Times are in a circulation agreement with the D-G but are judged as separate newspapers by the APA.

• The Southwest Times Record of Fort Smith won 10 awards, including four first-place, three second-place, two third-place and one honorable mention.
