D-G Sweeps State APME, Morning News Takes N.W.

Statewide, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette swept the Arkansas Press Association Managing Editors awards in May, winning 15 first-place, 10 second-place and three third-place awards in the larger newspapers category. Thats in addition to the general excellence award.

But only three of the D-Gs awards were garnered by staffers from the newspapers Northwest Arkansas office in Lowell. Beth Hall won first place for feature sports photo. Scott Cain won first place for spot sports story. And Michael Woods won third place for spot sports photo.

The Morning News of Springdale won six first-place awards, seven second-place awards and 10 third-place awards in the larger newspaper competition.

The Morning News first-place awards included:

Jeff Niese and John Anderson, health coverage

Doug Thompson, hard news column

John Brummett, sports column

Marc Henning, photo portfolio

J.T. Wampler, sports photo

Morning News staff, coverage of a single event (the school facilities report)

Brenda Blagg, a Morning News columnist, won the APME Presidents Award for her support of the states Freedom of Information Act during the last legislative session. The staff of The Morning News (along with the West Memphis Evening Times) received the Mark Twain Award for assistance to The Associated Press bureau.

Judith Hansen won the only first-place award for The Southwest Times Record of Fort Smith. That award was for lifestyles/human interest column writing. The Times Record also won four second-place awards and four third-place awards.

The Northwest Arkansas Times of Fayetteville and Benton County Daily Record of Bentonville were included with the D-G awards since those newspapers are distributed with the D-G.
