Shelli Owen and Jennifer Black saw a need in Northwest Arkansas and decided they were just the people to fill it. The pair, based out of Owen’s home in Goodman, Mo., were helping a friend clean a house prior to moving in and found it had been a methamphetamine lab.

When they searched for information on how to clean the dangerous chemicals out of the home, they were amazed to find there was no one who really did the job. They had assumed the work was done by the police, but found that they were wrong.

They decided to start a cleaning business for meth labs, crime scenes where suicides and homicides have been committed, and homes with mold. They both became certified by American Biorecovery and then invested $25,000 in equipment such as an ozone machine, a negative air machine and a pressure sprayer. Add to that the safety suits, masks, gloves and various other safety equipment, and they are ready for just about any chemical or biological hazard.

Owen said she really wants to grow the business for the sake of renters and home buyers in this area. Bioclean, in addition to its owners, has one part-time employee, but Owen already has plans for more.

In addition, Owen is working with area legislators to get standards in place for homes that have been used as methamphetamine labs. “There’s no accountability right now,” she said. “That should definitely be changed.”
