Morning News Gets Scoop on MarketFoods, Windgate (Outtakes Opinion)

We were impressed with two recent business related scoops in The Morning News.

One was Anita French’s tenacious coverage of the travails of Rogers-based MarketFoods Ltd., which owns The Market at Pinnacle Point in Rogers and another upscale grocery store in Tulsa.

When owner Richard Donckers told French that the company “had not made a decision to close” its store in Glenview, Ill., French called the store, and an employee said the store would close in a few days. She broke that story on Jan. 15.

And on Jan. 25, French had the scoop on MarketFoods filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Fayetteville. It was the only local story on the business section front that day, but for some reason, the editors put it on the bottom half of the page under a story about a sawmill in Seattle.

Then, on Jan. 27, Jeff Smith had a front-page story saying The Windgate Charitable Foundation of Siloam Springs was the anonymous donor that gave $10 million to the University of Arkansas in January.
