The Jones Center Development Council, a new fundraising effort for the Jones Center for Families in Springdale, held its first meeting and officially kicked off its first initiative on Feb. 4.

Kelly Kemp, chief advancement officer for the Jones Center, said members of the council will cultivate private support from the community to lessen the facility’s reliance on its $40 million endowment.

It costs an average of about $10,000 a day to run the facility, which offers an ice rink, gymnasium, swimming pool and other free-to-the-public perks.

About 46 percent of the center’s daily operations are paid from the endowment, 30 percent come from contributions, 15 percent from grants and 9 percent is generated in revenue and reimbursements, Kemp said.

The first development council fund raising effort is the “Friends of Bernice Giving Circle,” which asks patrons to commit to giving a set amount to the center for five years.

Along with Kemp, the council includes: Greg Allen, John Ervin, Christine Meier, Elise Mitchell, Gregg Ogden, David Pierre, Susan Schallhorn, Greg Swoyer, Tom Torralbas, Vicky Wood and Buddy Wray.

“We hope to operate [the Jones Center] in perpetuity,” Kemp said.
