ASGA Schedule Shuns NWA

For the first time in several years, the Arkansas State Golf Association doesn’t have an official championship event scheduled for Northwest Arkansas or the Arkansas River Valley.

Last year, the ASGA held its Men’s Stroke Play Championship at Hardscrabble Country Club in Fort Smith.

Mac Stubbs, director of handicapping at the ASGA, said the schedule just worked out that way this time.

“We love Northwest Arkansas,” Stubbs said. “The people up there are very generous with their facilities and there’s a lot of good venues and players. It just didn’t work out this year.”

Only three ASGA sponsored championships — state tournaments run by the organization — are left up for grabs on 2005’s schedule. The ASGA women’s committee is still trying to place a ladies club team championship, ladies scramble championship and a parent/child championship.

Two ASGA designated events — tournaments run by the local club but that count toward ASGA Player of the Year Points — are set for the northwest corridor.

The first is the June 25-26 stroke play at Fayetteville’s Paradise Valley Golf and Athletic Club. Lowell’s Lost Springs Golf Club has another designated stroke play event July 9-10.

We also hear a junior designated event is in the works for the new ownership at Valley View Golf Club in Farmington.
