Combs Buys Farmington Acreage

Gary Combs recently bought more than 1,300 combined acres of land in Farmington and Prairie Grove for about $15 million.
The 700 acres in Prairie Grove includes the well known 250-acre Sundowner Ranch, much of which was owned by the leather importer/exporter Mahler family of Dallas. Most recently, the Mahlers have used their portion of Sundowner to raise ostriches.
“Before that, it was owned by the Mahlers, Danny Thomas, Joe Fred Starr and ‘The Deal Makin’ Man’ Darryl Hickman,” Combs said. “But I can’t disclose all of the owners out there now.”
Combs said he is working on “picturesque residential development plans” for the properties. He said the Illinois River runs nearby and he hopes to incorporate it into the design process.
