D-G Issues Monumental BCS Butt Kickin? (Opinion)

There was no comparison Dec. 8 between the sports section front pages in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette’s locally zoned edition and The Morning News in Springdale.

Both sections covered the mind-numbing mess that is this year’s Bowl Championship Series, but the D-G really did it like a major market newspaper.

Counting stories and art elements (pictures, graphics, charts, etc.) as one item each, the D-G’s version numbered nine pieces including a main national story, local analysis, two photos and several logos, charts and other visuals.

The Morning News’ section front package had five (less eye-catching) elements including the same Associated Press photo of Razorbacks Coach Houston Nutt that the D-G had.

Inside, both papers had more charts, pictures and information, and overall both eventually gave the reader the big picture. The D-G just went the extra mile to give the biggest story of the day the treatment it deserved.
