FedEx Freight East took home the first place award for the third consecutive year in the American Trucking Association’s National Fleet Safety Contest. FedEx East, a subsidiary of the FedEx Corp., won the award in the line haul carrier category for over 100 million miles of operation.

Two other local firms that would have fallen in the same category — J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. and USA Truck Inc. — did not participate in the contest this year. Sandie Harp., an administrative assistant at J.B. Hunt, said the Lowell-based firm was not able to meet the application deadline for the 2003 contest.

Mike Neal, director of safety for USA Truck, said his firm has participated in similar safety contests in years past.

The award is based on the lowest accident rate per million vehicle miles of operation.
