Annabelle Nickell hadn’t planned to open her own business. But after working for her brother Aaron Nickell at Woodworks Plus for several years, she gained a reputation that wouldn’t let her stop working. She had left Woodworks in November, gotten married and prepared to settle down as a new bride, but her plans changed.

Several of Nickell’s contacts through Woodworks Plus got in touch to get her opinion on pending projects and encouraged her to make her services available again. So, Nickell recruited her sister, Angel Hobbs, to help her start a home construction business.

Nickell is now orchestrating the construction of houses that average 2,300-2,500 SF, while Hobbs handles the bookkeeping. They’re building about 15 houses in that range right now in Emerald Heights subdivision off Pleasant Grove Road in Benton County.

“We don’t develop the development, but after the streets are cut in, we do it all,” Nickell said. “We mainly build for investors.”

The two sisters have a residential construction contractors license. They’ve hired three employees — two superintendents and a technology coordinator.

They’d like to add another superintendent and at least one office assistant in the next year.

Nickell and Hobbs have a 2,600-SF office in Farmington and invested about $25,000 to launch the business. They hope to make that back in the first two years of operation.
