On Feb. 18, Bennie Westphal and Matthew Cobb asked the Fayetteville Planning Commission for a lot split to make room for construction of a new Lowe’s store in west Fayetteville.

Janet Strain, the city’s senior planning clerk, said the request was to split a 78-acre lot into three lots — 58, 13 and seven acres. The property is west of a new Superior Federal Bank building on U.S. Highway 62, heading toward Farmington.

Strain said she expects to receive a large-scale development plan for construction of the store by March 3.

We were unable to reach Westphal at his Fort Smith office, and Lowe’s didn’t return our telephone call.

In December 2001, Westphal and Cobb requested a lot split at the same location. At that time, they owned 82.5 acres and were splitting off a 1.38-acre lot, which appears to have been for the Superior Federal building. The bank is at the corner of Finger Road and Highway 62.
