Are We There Yet? (Media Review)

We’ve shaken our heads at many of Wally Hall’s columns in the past but usually understand that facts are often overlooked in opinion writing.

Nevertheless, Hall’s March 10 sports column in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette proved his obvious lack of geographical knowledge.

Hall said Chattanooga, Tenn., was “practically a suburb” of the University of Tennessee campus. Huh?

The UT campus in Knoxville, Tenn., is 110 miles away from Chattanooga and a two-hour and five-minute drive according to www.Maps.com. Saying those two towns are practically suburbs is akin to saying Fayetteville and Russellville (119 miles) are neighbors. Little Rock is only 132 miles from West Memphis. And New York City is only 94 miles from Philadelphia. We’ve never heard of those cities being described as suburbs of each other.

Incidentally, we’ve noticed a few of the old “Dump Wally” bumper stickers lately around Fayetteville.
