We could not have picked a better site for a recent spur-of-the-moment lunch. On The Mark Sports Bar & Grill in Fayetteville provided our group with good food and fast.

On The Mark is at the former home to Coach’s Sports Grill in Fayetteville and is owned by Mark Wright. Wright is a former general manager at Hugo’s restaurant, another of our favorite lunch spots in Fayetteville.

Wright promised to upgrade the menu at On The Mark when he took over in August. He also instigated daily lunch (11 a.m.-3 p.m.) specials that are $5 with a promise to be served within 15 minutes.

We started the lunch off with an order of crabby cakes with shrimp ($5.95). There were three of the cakes and they were extremely filling, particularly for the diner who hogged two of them. The special sauce Wright put on the side made for one of the best appetizers in the area.

Also ordered early was the corn tortilla chips and salsa ($2.75), of which one diner replied, “There was enough to go around for some of the other guys. It was a real good starter.”

One diner, an almost daily visitor to On The Mark, had the cajun meat loaf ($5 on Fridays). It came with mashed potatoes, green beans and a roll.

“[The meat loaf] has got a great bite, but it’s not too hot to run people off,” said the diner. “And $5? What a deal. I also love their catfish ($5 on Thursdays) and their open-faced roast beef ($5 on Mondays).”

Another diner had the daily special of chicken cordon bleu ($5 on Tuesdays) with rice, green beans, roll and a dinner salad. The chicken was a little on the dry side, but still satisfying.

The other daily special is the fried chicken breast ($5 on Wednesdays).

A third diner had a hamburger ($4.50), which is 1/3-pound of black angus ground beef.

“Another thing is, who ever the chef is comes up with some great soups,” said our regular at On The Mark.

The restaurant also serves sandwiches from a catfish po’boy ($5) to Italian beef ($5.75), entrees from an 8-ounce filet mignon ($17) to a marinated chicken breast ($10), seafood from Caribbean crab-stuffed snapper ($13) to golden fried shrimp ($14), as well as a pasta primavera ($11).

On The Mark has four pool tables, 33 regular television sets, three big-screen TVs and a variety of seating. There is also an enclosed cigar room with seating for about 20 people.
