After 15 years of corporate life, Terri Falconer decided she wanted to concentrate on something she loves — decorating. Falconer, who was living in Washington, D.C., was looking for a spot to locate a new business somewhere relatively close to her family in Oklahoma when she discovered Northwest Arkansas.

“I just fell in love with the area,” she said. “It’s a well-kept secret.”

Her instant love for the area and its booming economy combined to convince her that Fayetteville would be her next home and the place to start a home décor and gift shop.

Falconer rented 1,600 SF of space in northeast Fayetteville’s Crossroads Village, stocked it with “a real eclectic mix” of home décor items and hired a part-time employee. Since her “soft opening” in August, Falconer said the shop has really taken shape and she’s been able to stock a unique variety of items that’s attracting more shoppers.

“Part of it is getting a feel for the market,” she explained. “I like to keep a variety, because I like a variety. I’m bringing in new things constantly.”

Falconer said she has always liked decorating. Large furniture pieces make a home comfortable, but the small décor items a homeowner selects personalizes the home, she said.

In addition to a variety of home accent pieces, Mayfair also offers reproduction antiques, Root candles and Baldwin brass items, including the Baldwin brass Christmas ornament collection.

Falconer declined to say how much she’s invested in Mayfair but said she hopes to make her investment back in the first year.
