Operational flaws, personal bankruptcy and embarrassing public displays led to the resignation of Fayetteville Boys & Girls Club executive director John Benberg, one board member said. And Benberg’s three-month, half-salary severance was agreed upon before the club’s board of directors became aware of Benberg’s arrest for driving while intoxicated and careless driving.

“I don’t know why he wouldn’t have told me,” said Mike Hill, president of the club’s board. “I’m shocked.”

The Farmington Police Department confirmed that Benberg was charged with a DWI at 1:22 a.m. on Sept. 27. Benberg’s wife, Marilyn (who goes by “Myshell”), and passenger Steve Immke were also arrested for public intoxication. A fourth person was not charged. John Benberg failed the field sobriety test, according to officer Chad Dorman, who said Benberg refused to take the breathalyzer test. Benberg contests the charge.

Benberg, under fire from some board members for various reasons, offered his resignation within the next couple of weeks, but without disclosing his arrest. He agreed to remain as a consultant for new executive director Eric Schuldt through Jan. 31.
