Building on to Baum?

The University of Arkansas’ Baum Stadium, ranked in 1998 as the best collegiate baseball facility by Baseball America, may soon be getting a facelift.

New head coach Dave Van Horn has yet to coach a game there after replacing the retiring Norm DeBriyn, but he will have his office and his assistants’ offices moved to Baum Stadium. They have been on the same floor as the football coaches and others at the Broyles Athletic Center, about a mile north of the baseball facility.

UA Athletic Director Frank Broyles also said the batting cage at Baum Stadium would be enclosed, but added, “Anything else is problematical.”

There have been rumors of additional sky boxes — there are currently two — being built as well as expanding the seating capacity down the left-field and right-field lines.

“That’s a little premature right now,” Broyles said. “A baseball coach will come in with a nice wish list. So did [new UA basketball coach] Stan Heath. He’s got a wish list for Walton [Arena].”

Asked if Van Horn’s contract included changes to Baum Stadium, Broyles said, “Absolutely not.”
