Dr. Robert H. McCollum was remembered as a family doctor in the truest sense following his death June 15.

McCollum died at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn. He was 67.

The longtime Fayetteville doctor was remembered as a quintessential family doctor. He was also an avid supporter of the University of Arkansas athletic teams, serving as co-chairman of the Lady Razorback Foundation and receiving several “honorary team member” awards from the Razorback track, swimming and football teams.

The family requested that donations be made to the Robert H. McCollum, M.D., Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the Razorback Foundation or to Kids Across America.

McCollum was born in Little Rock, grew up in Conway, attended Arkansas State Teachers College (now the University of Central Arkansas), served two years of active service in the Navy, and eventually graduated in 1962 from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

After an internship in Fort Worth, he established a practice in family medicine in Gravette and Noel, Mo. He moved his practice to Fayetteville in 1966, where his clinic has remained for 36 years.

“Dr. Bob,” as he was known by friends, was particularly close to the University of Arkansas, where he often cared for students and faculty.

Former UA and NFL star Bobby Joe Edmonds even led the calling of the Hogs at the service.
