Nathaniel Bothwell, president of Arkansas National Bank’s online division, has been appointed to a national commission that’s studying information security needs for the financial industry.

He will represent the Bentonville bank June 24-25 at Rand Corp.’s Arlington, Va., facilities for a workshop that aims to identify critical national gaps in information security. Others invited to participate include industry giants such as Citibank, Morgan Stanley, Visa and Deutche Bank.

A group of Dartmouth University researchers, who recently received congressional funding to establish the Institute of Information Infrastructure Protection (I3P), is hosting the event. Rand is the event sponsor.

“Odds are I’ll be the only one in the room who flies coach,” Bothwell said.

Bothwell, 31, has for the last three years served on the Independent Community Bankers Association’s payments and technology committee. I3P wanted to have an independent community bank presence at its financial industry workshop, and the ICBA recommended Bothwell.

The ICBA represents 4,500 banks across the nation.

According to a press release issued by Arkansas National Bank, ICBA officials said, “ANB continues to stay ahead of the curve, and the ICBA is aware of their track record — it was a good fit.”

I3P, developed following the attacks of September 11 and endorsed by the National Security Council, is a government-funded, nonprofit cyber security lab. The purpose of this month’s research and development workshop is to obtain banking and finance sector input, according to the institute’s Web site.
