Lindy Arnt striped his first parking lot at age 7. The hot and heavy work of asphalt sealing and paving was the Arnt family’s business in Michigan, and Lindy Arnt grew up knowing how to patch a cement crack with hot rubber.

At age 18 Arnt began collecting equipment of his own and subcontracting jobs for his father’s company.

In January, 22-year-old Arnt gathered his tools and moved to Springdale to open Arnt Asphalt Sealing Co. He received an associate’s degree in business management from Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac, Mich.

Arnt keeps his equipment in a 7,000-SF storage facility in Springdale. Because he already owned most of the necessary machinery, Arnt’s initial investment was minimal. He said it would cost about $50,000 to start a similar business from scratch.

Expecting $300,000-$400,000 in sales for his first year in business, Arnt said he is confident that Arnt Asphalt Sealing Co. can immediately compete with other, more established businesses for commercial and residential jobs.
