Pettyjohn Inc., doing business as CandL Computer & Internet Services, has grown at a rate of about two new customers per day since becoming an Internet service provider in January. As of May 1, the firm boasted 130 customers online.

Lila Pettyjohn, who co-owns the Pea Ridge company with husband Charles Pettyjohn, said low prices and local service are behind the success. The couple spent about $15,000 to get the business started.

CandL, founded in November and pronounced “candle,” offers ISP services to cities with local access to the 451 telephone prefix such as Pea Ridge, Garfield and Gateway. Two Missouri cities, Seligman and Washburn, also can dial 451 locally and are included in CandL’s 25-mile service area.

CandL has one point of presence. It does Web hosting and design, graphic design, computer training and offers custom-built jobs, computer repair and parts sales.

The company gives Northwest Arkansas 13 locally based ISPs, including three in Benton County.

“We don’t try to compete with the big companies,” Lila Pettyjohn said. “What we do is offer low prices, and we make house calls.”

Pettyjohn said CandL’s customers prefer dealing with an ISP that’s based in Pea Ridge. The only two other ISPs that offer service for the 451 exchange are CenturyTel in Monroe, La., and Arkansas.Net in Fayetteville.

Pettyjohn said CandL offers unlimited Internet access for $18.95 per month or a tiered-price structure for three, six and 12 months. The company also teaches computer classes of four to eight people, Pettyjohn said, to ensure individualized attention.

Lila is a Fayetteville native and Charles is from Houston. In early 2001, they helped start ABComputers, a Pea Ridge computer sales and repair shop, with Bob and Babe DuBois. But Pettyjohn said she and Charles wanted to start a new venture.
