On April 19-20, Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville hosted a cardiology conference featuring heart research experts Dr. Christopher Granger, an associate professor of medicine at Duke University Medical Center, and Dr. Neal Kleiman, an associate professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine.

Called The Continuum of Cardiac Care, the conference presented lectures about rapid, pre-hospital heart attack treatment. WRMC Drs. Ted Fish, Anne Courtney-Eighmy, James Cooper, Lee Gray and Travis Embry, registered nurse Lydia Fields and biostatician Sean Mulvenon were credited last summer for the research on a related project.

WRMC’s protocol program — “PEP” for pre-hospital electrocardiogram and IV thrombolysis in acute myocardial infarction — will be operating in 50 hospitals by August, said Courtney-Eighmy, the PEP co-principal investigator.

The event drew more than 175 doctors, nurses, pharmacists and paramedics to the Fayetteville Town Center. According to WRMC administrators, 25-30 percent of those were from out of town.
