The University of Arkansas board of trustees voted on April 5 to increase tuition at 10 of the UA system’s 12 campuses.

The proposed increases per credit hour for undergraduate in-state students (or in-district students at the community colleges) include:

• UA Community College at Morrilton, 20.8 percent from $48 to $58.

• UA Community College at Batesville, 14.3 percent from $35 to $40.

• UA at Fort Smith, 12.5 percent from $40 to $45.

• UA Community College at Hope, 11.4 percent from $44 to $49.

• Phillips Community College of the U of A, 7.3 percent from $41 to $44.

• UA at Fayetteville, 7 percent from $111.30 to $119.10.

• UA at Little Rock, 7 percent from $111 to $118.75.

• UA at Pine Bluff, 7 percent from $83 to $88.80.

• UA at Monticello, 5.1 percent from $79 to $83.

The board also voted to raise the per-semester tuition for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock by 5 percent, from $5,040 to $5,292.

The increases, which go into effect in the fall, will amount to an additional $117 per semester for students taking 15 hours on the Fayetteville campus. The above amounts don’t include fees.

UA officials in Fayetteville said the increase was needed because state appropriations for the upcoming academic year ($96.9 million) amount to only a 0.3 percent increase over last year ($96.6 million).

The state appropriation for the Fayetteville campus increased by 4.3 percent last year, 5.5 percent in 2000 and 0.3 percent in 1999.

UA administrators requested the largest tuition increases for the smaller colleges recently taken into the UA system.
