William Tomblin opened TDC Information Systems Consulting to offer evening and weekend computer solutions. Making house calls only, Tomblin repairs and upgrades personal computers. He also installs and maintains small- and home-office networking.

Tomblin operates the new business around the schedule of his full-time job as a service technician at Cox Communications. He said about $1,500 equipped his 1,000-SF home office with the computer hardware and tools he needs to work on the machines.

After serving a four-year tour in the Navy, Tomblin moved to Northwest Arkansas in September because his family lives here. He previously was stationed at Jacksonville, Fla.

Although the military taught him some computer skills, Tomblin credits most of his knowledge to personal book studies and hands-on learning. He is Cisco certified and said he will soon become certified for Microsoft, too.
