Family income in Arkansas will be the lowest in the nation during the next federal fiscal year the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported recently.

Median income for a four-person family in the state is estimated at $44,537 for the 2003 fiscal year ranking Arkansas last among states and the District of Columbia and at only 71.6 percent of the national estimate of $62,228.

The report was prepared by DHHS’s Office of Community Services for use in setting income qualifications for low-income home energy assistance and was published Jan. 30 in the Federal Register. The estimates are derived by the U.S. Bureau of the Census and the 2000 per capita income estimates from the Bureau of Economic Analysis.
