Three Liquor Stores Approved for Fayetteville

For the first time since 1984, the Arkansas Alcoholic Beverage Control Board has approved new package liquor stores for Fayetteville.

The state Legislature passed a bill in 1983 limiting the number of liquor stores to one per 2,500 residents, said Don Bennett, staff attorney for ABC. The law was changed in about 1991 to one liquor store per 4,000 residents, he said. Existing liquor stores were grandfathered in, and the population has just now caught up with the number of liquor stores that were here 19 years ago.

“There were so many in Washington County and Fayetteville back in ’83 that Fayetteville is just now catching up,” Bennett said.

The permits were issued to:

• Danny R. Funderburg for 265 Liquor at 2887 Millennium Drive,

• Michael D. Been for The Liquor Cabinet at 1680 N. College Ave. and

• George A. Bethell for Premiere Wine & Spirits at the corner of Arkansas Highway 265 and Joyce Boulevard.

Bennett said Funderburg and Bethell have yet to construct buildings for their stores. Been has an existing building but must wait 30 days until he receives his liquor permit before opening the store.
