Mercy Health System of Northwest Arkansas recently attracted a renowned cardiologist to its growing staff of heart specialists. This month, Dr. James Werner will begin practicing with Drs. Michael Allen and Douglas Marciniak at the cardiology clinic adjacent to St. Mary’s Hospital in Rogers and at Mercy Health Center in Bentonville.

“It takes several key components to put together a first-rate open heart program,” said Susan Barrett, president and CEO of Mercy Health System, in a press release. “It starts with the cardiologists, and Dr. Werner is one of the best in the country.”

According to a press release, Werner was one of 16 original U.S. investigators who developed the stent, a device to re-establish blood flow through a blocked or obstructed artery.

St. Mary’s currently provides diagnostic procedures, noninvasive nuclear medicine and echocardiogram heart studies. Open-heart surgery, angioplasty and coronary stent placement will become available in January.

While practicing for Mercy Health System, Dr. Werner plans to work with cardiology fellows through the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences in Little Rock.
