The Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport in Highfill has hired four additional security officers to patrol the facility in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorism. That brings the total number of private security officers at the airport to nine.

Scott Van Laningham, the airport director, said the additional officers will cost the airport $8,000 per month.

XNA is also being patrolled by members of the Arkansas National Guard.

Van Laningham said business dropped by about 50 percent during the week following Sept. 11, but by early October, business was back to 90 or 95 percent of its normal capacity.

Van Laningham said the airport is currently allowing passengers to take aboard only one carry-on bag, but a “personal item” such as a purse or briefcase is also allowed.

Passengers are still allowed to check two bags without an additional charge, he said.
