Hispanic Diabetes Program Fostered in Poplar House
St. Mary’s Hospital in Rogers will continue its diabetes outreach to Latinos by offering free glucose screenings through Poplar House Clinic, according to a release from the hospital.
Amigos en la Salud, or Friends in Health, provided screenings and bilingual educational classes for Hispanics until initial funding from the Sisters of Mercy Health System in St. Louis ended.
Donations from the United Way and the Wal-Mart Foundation have prolonged some of the program’s services. Beginning in July, blood-sugar screenings are scheduled for the first and third Thursday evenings and the second and fourth Tuesday mornings of the month.
According to the release, the former staff of the Friends in Health program will be transferred to other positions within the Mercy Health System, and the Poplar House employees will take over the screenings.
